Extinction is definitely far from cute, but designer Josh Finkle’s handcrafted models of critters that once roamed the Earth are just that, if heartbreakingly so. Carved from maple, wenge, and beech, the four anthropomorphic designs (Tasmanian tiger, quagga, pig-footed bandicoot, and Steller’s sea cow) allow the natural grain and color of the contrasting hardwoods to shine through. And if the toys pique your curiosity about the animals they represent, then Finkle has done his job. You don’t have to look far for their backstories, either — each animal is packaged in a box that unfolds into an infographic about the dearly departed species.
