The cover depicts Dr. Bill Sears’ method of attachment parenting for the feature article, “The Man Who Remade Motherhood.” The article is an in depth expose about Dr. Sears, his wife Martha, and attachment parenting, which breastfeeding plays a major role in. The cover has already sparked much controversy around the internet, especially on Twitter and parenting blogs.

 Some people are tweeting:

  • @TheRealCarolina- “Wait, so this is for real?!? This picture is gonna haunt this kid foreverrrrrr.”
  • @dsmolokoff- New TimeMagazine is so disturbing. If your kid can tap you on the shoulder and tell you he’s hungry, you shouldnt be whipping out the nip”

While advocates are tweeting:

  • @roasted_beanz- “Time Magazine rocks #Motherhood w/new cover. Is it too provocative? #Breastfeeding http://ti.me/TimeMagCover”
  • @babyandkid- “Love how a mom #breastfeeding her 3yo (as I do) made it to a cover of a huge magazine.”

Also inside the issue of Time, there are several attachment parenting articles and a excellent Q&A with the cover model, 26 year old breastfeeding mom of 2 and blogger, Jamie Lynne Grumet. Writer Katie Pickert asks Jamie,

“What do you say to people who say breast-feeding a 3-year-old is disturbing or wrong?”
“They are people who tell me they’re going to call social services on me or that it’s child molestation. I really don’t think I can reason with those people. But as far as someone who says they’re uncomfortable with this, I don’t think it’s wrong to admit this. But people have to realize this is biologically normal. It’s not socially normal. The more people see it, the more it’ll become normal in our culture. That’s what I’m hoping. I want people to see it.

There seems to be a war going on between conventional parenting and attachment parenting, and that’s what I want to avoid. I want everyone to be encouraging. We’re not on opposing teams. We all need to be encouraging to each other, and I don’t think we’re doing a very good job at that.”

I applaud Jamie for her courage to expose her beliefs to a national magazine. I have to agree, the more people see women breastfeeding, the more socially accpetable it will become. There are so many people, even moms, that are uncomfortable with seeing a woman breastfeeding in public that something has to change this discomfort. I don’t think any person should judge another mom’s choices for feeding her baby- unless it is something that will harm a child. Obviously we know the benefits of breastfeeding. The WHO recommends “exclusive breastfeeding is recommended up to 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond.” I believe in the Support in Integrity Pledge:  “I PLEDGE to use my energy to help defuse dogmatic battles about what technique, position, frequency, equipment, duration or organization a woman chooses for breastfeeding. I affirm that my time is best spent directing my positive, encouraging support toward helping mamas successfully breastfeed.”

This is amazing and I truly love it! When I saw this I didn’t think to myself “How disgusting”, I honestly thought “She is giving her son the best source of food and nutrition out there”. I find it more vulgar to see men sucking on women’s breast like that 3 year old. She’s doing what every mother should be doing which is taking care of her child and the natural way. I just recently read an article about the food and poison administration finding vet drugs in our infants formula milk! Now that is something that really bothers me but, to those who are bashing her think twice about what your saying because the truth is no matter what your age is, a good majority of you have been fed the BOOB at least once in your lives.
