If you envision your little one as a budding eco warrior or simply a cute elfin sprite, you might consider preserving your child’s essence with a customized leaf portrait by Jenny Lee Fowler. We love the ingenuity and resourcefulness of these silhouette cut-outs, a modern interpretation of early Americana or green Victoriana. Simply provide a clear photo of your child’s profile against a neutral background, and the artist will craft a unique likeness that no other print can replicate. It’s a great way to share the spirit of green and support crafty endeavors of the sustainable realm.

Jenny Lee Fowler hand-cuts these customized portraits from fresh leaves measuring approximately 2” x 3”, with stem intact. There are no shadows, no tracings, no Photoshop tricks involved – only a keen artist’s eye and very sharp scissors. As with all organic materials, a leaf portrait will gradually change color and dry over time, so they are best preserved pressed flat under glass and displayed out of direct sunlight. The leaves used are often Algerian Ivy – as well as other (non-endangered) species.

The artist describes more about the crafting process on her etsy shop page:

“You send me an image or two taken in profile against a neutral background from about 4 feet away. Be sure to include head and shoulders with mouth closed in a natural position. I cut your portrait and send you a proof. Once you are happy with the cutting, I mount it, sign it, and mail it off to you.

For multiple copies, enlargements, or other special considerations, please drop me a note and we can talk about the details and pricing for your request. Files are kept for every portrait in case you’d like to order additional copies.”
