Parents of children with food allergies know what a horrifying experience it can be when some unsuspecting, kindhearted soul offers their child a seemingly benign treat – a PB&J sandwich for example. This type of occurrence usually takes place outside of the child’s routine environment, on a school trip perhaps, and can be prevented by a clever set of food allergy cards designed by Select Wisely.
Aimed at adults traveling abroad, the cards come in various translations, though it is the picture depicted on the graphic side that speaks volumes. Stick one in your child’s backpack for that first day of preschool to alert teachers to his or her allergy. Hand one to the babysitter on her first day of work. Or, with a reasonable length of yarn, turn the warning card into an alert pendant for school trips or outings with family groups where the usual caregivers are not present.
The cards also work well when used for the purpose for which they are designed. “Our entire family thanks you for your food allergy translation cards,” says one mom on the Select Wisely website. “We ordered some in Italian, French and Spanish due to our son’s severe peanut and tree nut allergies. On our first night in Rome we handed one to our waiter, who promptly took it back to the chef who said they would make him something special since they did indeed use peanut oil in their kitchen.”
Graphic cards retail for $9.50 and are available at the Select Wisely website. And if there isn’t a card that matches your child’s particular allergy or spoken language, Select Wisely makes custom versions.

what a great idea! Thankfully, these are not currently needed in our home, but I like knowing that people are becoming more aware of the issue and that tools such as these are available.
