In our placenta eating poll, most Inhabitots’ readers noted that munching on a placenta didn’t rate high on their to-do list. However, in pill form, placenta seems much more palatable, even to popular celebrities like Mad Men’s January Jones. According to reports, January Jones recently revealed that eating her own placenta helped her make a successful return to the set of Mad Men just weeks after giving birth. Jones gave birth to her son Xander in September and decided to encapsulate her placenta and eat it after her dolua suggested it. Jones noted, “Your placenta gets dehydrated and made into vitamins. It’s something I was very hesitant about, but we’re the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas… It’s not witch-crafty or anything! I suggest it to all moms!” Cool. We wonder if Jones is on board with breast milk cheese, too.

Placenta in pill form isn’t new. Advocates of placenta pills, which require dehydrating the placenta, then encapsulating it, say that these little pills pack a healthy punch. Placenta pill claims include the ability to balance your hormones, enhance your milk supply, increase your energy, and some even say that placenta pills may reduce or help prevent the baby blues or postpartum depression. In theory, placenta pills sound almost magical in nature, but before you start pill popping, be aware that few placenta pill claims are backed up with research in the scientific community. Since the cost to encapsulate pills can be considerable, make sure you research the benefits and cons first. If you decide placenta pills aren’t for you, there’s always other fun stuff to do with your placenta!
