September 15th-21st is Child Passenger Safety Week and Saturday, September 21st is National Seat Check Day, so now is the perfect time to have your car seat or booster seat checked, even if you are a veteran parent! Car crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 1-13, so proper car seat installation and making sure your child is traveling in the right type of seat is crucial. Even though cars eats are a must have, they are pretty rough on the environment and can even be hazardous to your child’s health.

All car seats expire within 4-6 years, so they must be thrown out. It is not safe to share car seats or to buy used because you have no idea if the seat has been in a crash or thrown around to damage parts. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell. At this time, seats are not able to be recycled through your city, though there are several specific car seat recycling programs in select cities.

While some companies have strayed away from brominated and chlorinated flame retardants in car seats, scientists still believe the majority are extremely harmful to your health. In 2011, over 150 big name brand car seats were tested for toxic chemicals and scientists found lead, PVC, brominated flame retardants, and other heavy metal allergens. Even car seat companies that claimed to use non-toxic materials, had trace amounts of bromine, lead, and other chemicals in their products.

Clek, a North American manufactured car seat company has taken a few extra steps to make less of an impact on the environment and to make traveling in a car seat safer for your child! Clek offers GreenGuard Select Certified fabric called Crypton Super Fabrics that are stain, moisture, and bacteria repellant. The fabric is also free of formaldehyde and perfluorooctanoic acid. Crypton is a no/low VOC fabric.

Clek also has a recycling program where you can mail your used/expired seat back to them and they will give you a $20 gift card for their website. This amount can be applied to a new booster seat or other accessory. Clek has formed relationships in Canada and the United States to manage the disassembly and recycling or reintroduction of the plastic, metal, foam and fabric components into other products.

Clek’s heavy duty convertible carseat, Foonf, is built to accommodate a child rear-facing until their 4th birthday. The AAP recommends children stay rear-facing until at least 2 years old or as long as their carseat will allow. There are foam layers on both the inside and outside of the frame to protect your child by absorbing energy in a side-impact collision, resulting in less force directly upon your child. While the seat is rear-facing, there is an Anti-Rebound bar that improves stability by limiting rotation of the child seat, helping to protect your child’s head from impact in the case of a collision. It also comes with LATCH systems for both forward and rear facing. The Foonf is for children 14 -65 pounds/ 25-49 inches. It also has a 9 year expiration!
