Facebook is a useful networking tool, not to mention a fun way to connect with friends, both new and old. However, like all things, Facebook is far from perfect. A while back, Facebook started deleting what they call “obscene images” from user photo albums. The offending images – breastfeeding photos.
Facebook has also threatened users with total profile deletion if they re-post their breastfeeding images. In protest to what can only be termed an archaic viewpoint, the group Hey, Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene! launched. The group’s mission is simple and clear; to convince Facebook to allow breastfeeding pictures to be posted and to get Facebook to stop classifying breastfeeding images as obscene.
Today, Saturday December 27th, 2008, the group Hey, Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene!, prompted by Mothers International Lactation Campaign (MILC) is holding a virtual nurse-in. They’re asking everyone who supports positive breastfeeding views to “change your profile picture for one day, to one which includes an image of a nursing mom.” Many are also planning to change their status lines that day to read “Hey Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene!””
In a sad blow to this campaign, the Hey, Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene! group posted news yesterday that group creator Kelli Roman had her account terminated by Facebook, No word on why yet, but you can follow the updates here.
In a world where scantily clad women in beer commercials and car magazines are prominent, it’s terribly sad that something as natural, healthy, and basic as breastfeeding is termed obscene. Women, babies, and families all deserve breastfeeding right without fear of being called inappropriate names. Joining this virtual nurse-in is one way you can support this.

OK….I am all for breastfeeding. I think its the most natural way to feed and nurture your baby… and in fact a beautiful way start for your new blessing. However, I don’t think its appropriate to display it on your facebook or myspace just for the fact that there are a LOT of disgusting perverts and child molesting a**holes out there who you are putting these pictures in front of. There are too many freaks out there who turn those beautiful and innocent pictures into something horrid to get off on in there home. Unfortunately, when putting these pics up you have NO control over who sees them or what they do with them.
I don’t know. I mean there are plenty of jerks walking the streets, hanging in coffee shops, and buying books at the same bookstores we go to. If we go totally by safe visuals, i.e. let’s not expose mothers breasts to anyone who might act lame about it, that would mean no breastfeeding anywhere in public, which of course would suck for a lot of mamas.
I think that putting breastfeeding out there makes it less of a ‘novelty’ and more normal which it should be. In some places in the world, breastfeeding is not considered sexual because it’s not a taboo topic; women simply breastfeed where and when they need to. Here we act like OMG a breast – when frankly most beer commercials show more skin than a breastfeeding mama. I do agree that you should think long and hard before placing a personal picture up though, because you’re not wrong, once it’s up, you have no control over who sees it. If mamas are comfortable with that notion though, these pictures should not be deemed inappropriate.
