                    [post_content] => This Halloween three-year old Aiden Mateo decided he wanted to be an owl, so with a little sewing and a tutorial from <a href="http://artfulparent.typepad.com/">The Artful Parent</a> and <a href="http://www.prudentbaby.com/">Prudent Baby </a>blogs, Michele de Jesus made these play wings and a costume that will get used well past Halloween! Michele upcycled 3 men's dress shirts from Goodwill and one new piece of fabric for the cloth feathers and the base of the wings. She decorated an old knit cap for the head and a shirt from consignment for the chest. A bit of sewing was involved, but Michele had fun!

<big><h2>HOW TO MAKE THIS COSTUME</h2></big>

<big><h2>Step 1:</h2></big> Michele upcycled 3 men's dress shirts from Goodwill and used 1 new piece of fabric for the cloth feathers, &amp; another new fabric for the base of the wings.

<big><h2>Step 2:</h2></big> Using a tutorial from The Artful Parent and Prudent Baby blogs she made a pattern then traced and cut out rows of scalloped cloth "feathers" and sewed them to the wings with a machine.

<big><h2>Step 3:</h2></big> She sketched a face from owl photos, chose fabrics, and sewed the face onto an old knit cap by hand. The shirt was from consignment.

<big><h2>Step 4:</h2></big> The wings are attached with elastic cord from her sewing stash, and tied at the wrists and neck. His brown pants also came from consignment.

Mela Bowers brought a little bit of Christmas to the year's spookiest day, creating a Grinch costume for her young son. Green plastic hair was glued on for that extra hairy look, a red blanket was upcycled into a Santa suit, and Mela used green face paint and molding clay for a very convincing and creepy face!

                    [post_content] => After playing Ocarina of Time for the first time, John Grimes' little brother asked if he could be the Link, the games protagonist, for Halloween. They broke out the boxes of old fabric we had and went to work. In they boxes they were lucky enough to find green fabric perfect for the costume's tunic and hat. The sword and shield were made from a wooden desk their neighbor threw out last month. The ensemble with a pair of old boots they found in their mother's closet. Viola! A homemade Link costume that didn't cost a dime!

<h3>HOW TO MAKE THIS COSTUME</H3>

<h3>Step 1.</h3>To make the hat first take a measurements of your head. Outlined the shape of the hat on to a piece of fabric Sew the ends of the fabric together with a sewing machine to complete the shape.

<h3>Step 2.</h3>To make the tunic measure your height and width. Cut your fabric to size. Then take a shirt, preferably one that already fits properly, and outlined it onto the fabric. Next use the scraps to make the sleeves, and sew all of the pieces together. If you don't already know how, learn how to use an iron and then use it to create a clean crease for the collar.

<h3>Step 3.</h3>To make the shield look for objects around the house that are about "shield" size. Sketch the design on a piece of wood and cut it out using a jigsaw. Sand, smooth and plane along the edges to give it the desired look. When your desired look is achieved fasten straps from an old backpack to the back of the shield using hot glue and tacks. Finally, finger paint the symbol on the front.

<h3>Step 4.</h3>Finally the sword, draw the sword design on another scrap of wood. Cut out it and sand it until it is smooth. Use a planner on the handle to achieve the correct thickness. Cut out the hilt design from 1/4 in. piece of wood to give the hilt added thickness. Finally use glitter and paint to make the jewel on the sword.

Amy Harper's kids love Legos, and every year she and her kids create their own Halloween costumes at home instead of spending money on boring big box costumes for the masses. This year they gathered pictures of Legos and collected boxes, poster boards, paints, glue, foam and went to work to create these two fantastic Lego men costumes.

                    [post_content] => Tina Harris' son wanted to be a Power Ranger or a Ninja for Halloween, but she refused to waste money on a Halloween costume worn once --nor did her family even have the money to spend. Instead, she found a box, some construction paper, a glue stick, and black duct tape and created two Rubik's cube costumes for her sons. The hardest part was getting the squares to fit evenly over the entire box. To her delight, once her son saw what a big deal everyone was making out of him and his little brother, he was not only happy that Mom made their costumes, but he started coming up with ideas for next year! They were the cutest kids on the BLOCK -- no pun intended!


<big><h2>HOW TO MAKE THIS COSTUME</h2></big>

<big><h2>Step 1:</h2></big> Find the perfect square box.

<big><h2>Step 2:</h2></big> Cut the bottom out of it, tape the other three sides closed, measure for a circle opening for your head (and arms if needed).

<big><h2>Step 3:</h2></big> Measure for what size blocks to cut out of construction paper and (glue) place them evenly on each side of box (random or same color).

<big><h2>Step 4:</h2></big> Finally, use black duct tape to go over each section vertically and horizontally -- keeping in mind to cover up the loose ends of tape.

Mom Audrey's son Bailynd is 6 years old and he used to go to work with her every morning. He always wanted to drive the towmotor, so he told her and her husband that he want to be a towmotor for Halloween. So after thinking long and hard about how to make a costume, the parents made it happen. They crafted this cool vehicle out of a heavy duty TVcardboard box, dollrods, foam balls, paint, and party mix container. The towmoter is even includes a box to collect and carry candy!

Since she figured a flat-screen would have been an easy out with little detail, she went for an older model with dial and speaker. This little TV even has a power cord and screen "glass" for the tube. Melissa Hughes dressed her two cuties Haddie and Koen up as s'mores this Halloween. She made these costumes for less than $5, upcycling an old white pillow case for the marshmallow and used felt for the graham cracker and chocolate!

To make his green Halloween costume, he got an old wig from Goodwill and paired it with an old tuxedo he had from a wedding he went to when he was younger. This costume was super cheap, super easy and super green. After using these pieces for her son's costume Nicole donated them to the thrift store so someone else can make use of them in the future!

Monica Rodgers son is 4 and it has become sort of a tradition to make his Halloween costume every year. They decided that they wanted to make an owl, but weren't sure what kind, until they saw a picture of the Tootsie Pop Owl...that was it! She had leftover fleece and felt from Halloweens past, and found the mortarboard and glasses at the local Goodwill. She made the tootsie pop out of her husband's drumstick, and the treat bag was an old grocery bag with our reference picture on it, so her son wouldn't have to explain to everyone. Jane Barkow purchased the crocheted hat on Etsy from a seller who used recycled yarn. The outfit was upcycled from her daughter's closet. She chose a brown top and bottom, and a pair of organic leg warmers from when she was a baby that still fit. Then she reused some old fabric from a previous sewing project for her wings. She cut two wing shapes from the fabric and glued them together with non-toxic craft glue. Next, she cut several feather shapes from EcoFelt and glued them in a pattern on the back of each wing. Nothing was sewn. To attach the wing's to her daughter's back, Jane glued Velcro on the top corner of the wings and the shirt so that they can be put on and removed easily at anytime. Also, she glued elastic to the bottom corner of the wings, which will attach to the child's wrists. Last but not least, she added a cute pair of pink Tom's shoes.

After looking around for ideas to use for the head, Pamela and her husband (who works in construction) found an old lamp post globe that they turned into a spectacular Jack head for their son's green Halloween costume. The parents cut holes out for the eyes and the head, used a margarita salt container for the base of the hat, and rolled up cardboard for pointed part. They then used painted drawer lining material for the eyes and xray film rolled up for a nose. Everything was hot-glued into place.

                    [post_content] => Robyn Vekeman's daughter loves Sesame Street and on Halloween, she was going to either have a newborn baby or be 39 weeks and 6 days pregnant so she wanted a costume that could accommodate her potential baby sister. She settled on Cookie Monster and a cookie and decided we'd also craft a giant cookie costume for Dad to wear, just in case Baby didn't show up (she didn't- but Robyn did wear the felt cookie we made pinned to her bump, instead of stitched onto a onesie as planned).

She knit her daughter an ear flap hat and sweater out of blue chunky yarn (one size up so it would fit over a jacket), with two Styrofoam eyeballs sewn on for eyes. Next, she made 2 cookies out of eco felt and stuffed them with cotton balls and attached to the cord "ties" on the ear flaps. She made 2 more felt cookies - these ones with a bite taken out - and sewed them onto little blue mittens.

For Dad's costume they cut 2 giant circles out of an old cardboard box (in this case, from her newly assembled crib). Then they painted paper plates and cut them out to look like chocolate chips before gluing on to the cardboard cookies. Add some ribbon tie shoulders and waist straps (here, the ribbon actually was taken from gift wrap from the couple's recent baby shower!).

She used 6 large cardboard boxes that were left over from moving, several cardboard inserts from packaging, 2 aluminum cans, 6 plastic containers (head and tail lights plus candy portals), 12 juice pouches (for mud flaps) and one milk jug. On either side they created “portals” that people could put the candy in and it dropp into a box placed on the inside. They even used it to collect up plastic bottles and cans that people needed to dispose of so that we could take them home and put them in our recycling bins. The costume proves there’s nothing wrong with having a little “junk in the trunk”!

                    [post_content] => For this fine feathered blue jay costume, Niusha and her daughter worked to create wings, a tail and mask for her green halloween DIY costume. 

<big><h2>HOW TO MAKE THIS COSTUME</h2></big>

<big><h2>Step 1:</h2></big> They collected 1/4 yard fabric in dark blue, light blue, white, and black. Next, they made a wing stencil 2 inches high and 9 inches wide with 5 crests. Tracing the stencil with chalk, they then cut out as many rows of feathers using the stencil as possible.

<big><h2>Step 2:</h2></big> For the wings, they used 1 yard in blue/grey color. They measured the little jay's wing span from edge of neck to bone on thumb and from edge of neck to their hip; those two measurements give you an L-shape to cut. Then, by drawing a round edge to connect the points of the L, they could see the wing. Next, they hot glueed thick ribbon to connect the wings and hot glued the thumb ties to the end of the wings.

<big><h2>Step 3:</h2></big> For the fabulous feathers, they hot glued all the feathers, using the same pattern, row by row. Then, with the left overs, they created a tail from a left over cardboard box and hot glued the tail to a thick piece of waistband.

<big><h2>Step 4:</h2></big> Using an unpainted casanova paper mache mask, they colored the beak and around the eyes black and the rest blue, leaving areas around the black eyes, white. Then, using the stencil of a feather, they cut out many dark blue and light grey crepe paper feathers. To finish off the mask, they glued the dark blue and light grey crepe paper to it in the form of feathers. And voila - a beautiful Blue Jay!

Elijah Roles wanted to be an Ugly Doll, a 6-foot tall Ugly Doll that is. So mom, Heather, traced an Ugly Doll on felt and sewed the 6-foot pieces together by hand. She bent wire hangers around the costume to give it shape and hand sewed them inside. She also stuffed the arms and legs. For the final touch, she made the trademark Ugly Doll tag by making photo copies of the real thing and enlarging it. Even though Elijah's town's Halloween got cancelled because of the storm and devastating damage, he was happy with his 100% handmade Nandy Bear Ugly Doll Costume.

It was a great costume, but the only thing she said she would change is to make it slightly shorter as her daughter who was 2.5yrs old couldn't get up the stairs for trick or treating!

The adorable little Android's costume uses energy efficient, green, cold-cathode lamps in her antennae. In addition, when her costume plugs into the "charger", her antennae illuminate!

<big><h2>HOW TO MAKE THIS COSTUME</h2></big>

<big><h2>Step 1:</h2></big> Take a brown dome lid trash can and cutout the bottom, installing straps inside to hold up costume. Cut holes out on top for antennae.

<big><h2>Step 2:</h2></big> Cut up a green plush blanket and hot glue it to the trash can. Glue  on white felt for the eyes.  

<big><h2>Step 3:</h2></big> Install cold cathode lighting from a computer store in the trash can dome holes. Hot glue in battery holders to hold 8 AA Batteries.

<big><h2>Step 4:</h2></big> Use an empty cardboard box for the charger and cut a 9" circle on top. Paint wood slats with chrome paint to create the faux electrical plug.

                    [post_content] => Rather then grabbing whichever toddler animal costume they sold at the mall, Crystal Evans-Pradhan got creative and dressed her daughter Sophie as something she loves! After watching her play with B. toys "Poppitoppy" toy over the summer she realized it would be a fun object to turn into a costume - completely mommy-made! Crystal sews toys and cloth balls on Etsy, so making the balls was easy. She raided her pattern stash to see what she already had on had to work with. She found a dress to modify into the top, and she modified her ball pattern for the hat, mini balls and the dome. To make the ring around the bottom, she repurposed wire hangers into a hoop and took scrapes of piping from pillows she had made to round it out. Crystal says it was a fun project and Sophie loves her costume!


<big><h2>HOW TO MAKE THIS COSTUME</h2></big>

<big><h2>Step 1:</h2></big> First, Crystal raided her pattern stash to see what she already had in the house to work with, before buying more! She found a dress that she modified into the top, then modified her ball pattern for the hat, the mini balls & the dome

<big><h2>Step 2:</h2></big> Next, she went through my fabric scraps to use what she had in her stash before buying more! Then she hit up the remnants section at the store before selecting fabrics from the shelf!

<big><h2>Step 3:</h2></big> To make the ring, she repurposed wire hangers into a hoop, then took scraps of piping from pillows she made to make it more round! Instead of buying a special foot to sew the vinyl, she realized she could use the one she had by putting scotch tape on the bottom to help it slide through the machine!

<big><h2>Step 4:</h2></big> When they are done with the costume, they can take out the balls and repurpose them to PLAY with!

For her son's first Halloween, Vanessa Brady decided to keep it simple. She went with a very minimal costume: Nacho Libre! She created the pants using thrift store leggings, cutting pieces of a pair of reg leggings and affixing them to a pair of blue leggings with fabric glue to create the pattern. Next, she made a cape out of red fabric. For the wig, she glued a feather boa to a baby beanie. for the finishing touches, she added some red socks she already had and drew a little mustache with a brown eyebrow pen. Vanessa says she was pretty much able to assemble this costume over a few naps. Easy, quick, cute and environmentally friendly? Win!



<big><h2>HOW TO MAKE THIS COSTUME</h2></big>

<big><h2>Step 1:</h2></big> Pants. Cut off the legs of the red leggings (thrifted, of course!), put "underwear" aside. Cut two small rectangles out of extra red fabric and affix to knees of blue leggings with fabric glue.

<big><h2>Step 2:</h2></big> Cape. Cut four 2x6" strips of red fabric. Sew right sides together, leaving an opening at the top to flip right side out. Cut two large triangles (size dependant on child). Measure and cut one tip of triangle, creating cape shape. Sew trim onto one panel. Sew edges of two triangles, right sides facing, including the neck straps. Flip right side out.

<big><h2>Step 4:</h2></big> Put it all together! Add some red socks you have just around the house, draw a little moustache with a brown eyebrow pen and you're ready for Nachooooooo!

Lisa Waugh was inspired this Halloween by everyone's favorite cookie master, the Keebler Elf! She needed a costume that would work for her 5 month old son to "cling" to her, but she also wanted to upcycle as much of the costume as possible. In all, she spent about $30 at consignment sales to build the perfect costume for the pair of them. Best part, she says she can reuse the costume for the family Christmas card photo!

First, she cut bottoms of a pair of used yellow pants to make them into shorts. She found a red hat and stitched the same yellow fabric on it as trim. She created a faux red vest from felt pieces and sewed it to a used white onesie. She also made a yellow tie from leftover pants parts. A beard turned upside down created the white hair for the hat. A green velvet zip-up jacket topped it all off.

Lisa then dressed all in brown and stiched some greenery on along with a Keebler logo. She even created a trick-or-treat bag out of a used Keebler cookie bag and some string.

<big><h2>Step 1:</h2></big> Gather materials: old cardboard boxes, water soluble paint (red and black), snoopy costume or stuffed animal.

<big><h2>Step 2:</h2></big> Cut cardboard into sheets - make sure (or create) one box that is big enough to fit around wheelchair - this will be the 'walls' of the house.

<big><h2>Step 3:</h2></big> Cut remaining cardboard into sheets and fold to form shingled "roof".  Spray paint red.  Use black paint to paint the door, stripes and 'snoopy' name.  Let paint dry.

<big><h2>Step 4:</h2></big> Fit over wheelchair and cut out hold for seated kid - position the 'Snoopy' part of the costume so it looks like he is 'sitting' on the roof

Marisa Domizio dreamed up this imaginative costume -- the adorable octopus has jumped into a boat and is having a grand time! She covered an old costume fabric, and added stuffed arms with iridescent fabric "suckers" on the bottom of each one. The boat is made from a cardboard box, painted to look like the real thing with chrome tape detailing. The boat covers a wagon that the octopus rides in.

All it takes is one pack of work socks, or a stash of them from your drawer or local thrift store and a sleeper your child already owns to make this cute and easy costume. It's adorable on a toddler and cozy for chilly trick or treating!


<big><h2>HOW TO MAKE THIS COSTUME</h2></big>

<big><h2>Step 1:</h2></big> Slice 4-5 socks from end to end, opening them up. Cut off the end of the toe of two socks and make those the legs of the costume. Do the same for sleeves.

<big><h2>Step 2:</h2></big> Lay out the sliced open socks over your child's sleeper to get an idea of how many you will need. By hand or machine, sew them together. Sew the sleeves on at the shoulder. Sew the legs onto the bottom of the torso.

<big><h2>Step 3:</h2></big> The crotch may be tricky, but you can stuff a long tube of extra sock material for a cute tail & cover up any imperfections. 

<big><h2>Step 4:</h2></big> Baste the sock monkey costume onto your child's sleeper so the scratchy wool is not next to their skin. Top with a toque (beanie) made with a spare sock or two or a matching hat from your child's closet. Adorable!.

This is Maya's 4th year entering Inhabitots' Green Halloween Contest. We here at Inhabitots have been lucky enough to watch Maya grow up, as she's entered our contest as Tinker Bell, Snow White, the Statue of Liberty, and now this year, a mermaid! But the best part about her entry this year is that mom Lena utilized every inch of last year's Statue of Liberty costume to make the mermaid costume this year!

<big><h2>HOW TO MAKE THIS COSTUME</h2></big>

<big><h2>Step 1:</h2></big><strong>Dress top:</strong> The nude-like top is created with an old dress. Lena used Maya's blouse as a template and constructed a top using old dress fabric. The Shell accents are created by cutting out shell shapes from last year's costume, then stuffing them with stuffing from an old stuffed animal. They have been hand-painted by mother and her daughter, then finally sewn down to the top.

<big><h2>Step 2:</h2></big><strong>Dress bottom: </strong>Lena cut out strips from Maya's Statue of Liberty costume from last year. Last year's costume was made with hand-dyed fabric utilizing her father's old T-shirt and her old skirt. The cut strips were then gathered then hand sewn, creating tiers of ripples and waves. The dress was hand painted with gold acrylic pant, and glitter accents. The glitter detail was done by Maya. Every inch of the Statue of Liberty costume was used for the bottom of the mermaid costume. Lena had virtually nothing left over because of all the gathering that was done on it.

<big><h2>Step 3:</h2></big><strong>Fin:</strong> The fin is constructed from a sturdy paper shopping bag. Lena cut out fin shapes from the bag, then sewed it to the dress. This also was hand-painted with gold and blue green acrylic paint, with glitter paint accents. Mom added a hole to the fin and fed the shopping bag rope handle through the fin so that Maya can wear it around her wrist to show off her "tail", and prevent dragging. Again Maya had fun helping paint her fin.

<big><h2>Step 4:</h2></big><strong>Hair accessory:</strong> (starfish) This is an "actual" starfish, a gift from Maya's grandparents from Hawaii. They sent over a bag of shells knowing that one day the family could utilize them for a craft project...and they did! They painted the starfish as well, adding shimmery fuscia acrylic paint details for the jewel effect. Maya's old hairclip was glued to the back.

This is Jaxon's (little brother to mermaid Maya) second entry into the <a href="ttp://www.inhabitots.com/greenhalloweencontest/">Inhabitots Green Halloween Contest</a>. Last year he was a finalist with his army costume made from an actual BDU.  This year he wished to be a Red SPD Power Ranger, which was quite a challenge for mom, Lena. At first, she was not sure how she was going to make the hard helmet, the red boots (without buying a pair), and all the patches on the jacket.  This is what she did:

<h2><big>Jacket:</big></h2>
Jaxon's mom Lena utilized Jaxon's old red jacket for the base. She cut off one sleeve and let the black lining show through to create the illusion that the fabric of one side of the arm was black like the actual SPD Red Power Ranger's jacket. She used remnants of white eco-felt and sewed it to the collar and also to the front and back of the jacket for all the "white" details. The felt is made from post consumer plastic bottles. The silvery grey details on the bottom of the jacket is created with leftover silver crushed velvet. The cuffs on the sleeves are pieces of rug padding that she cut to shape, then wrapped with silver tissue paper. Black sharpy for details. She then sewed the cuffs to the jacket. The patches on the shoulder and chest along with the belt buckle are all handpainted on scrap paper, decoupaged, then sewn to the jacket. The belt buckle is added to the jacket with velcro.

<h2><big>Helmet:</big></h2>
This is created with the "red hood" from the red jacket. Lena cut the eyes and mouth portion out of the hood, then added a piece of the same jackets black lining to the hood. The mesh-like fabric worked out because it allowed Jaxon to see and breathe. The details are all handpainted with silver and black paint.

<h2><big>Pants/Boots:</big></h2>
Lena used his Jaxon's sister Maya's old red pants for the pants and boots. The longer length pants worked out because I was able to utilize the excess fabric to stretch over his shoes to create the illusion that he was wearing boots. Hand painted card stock for the details on the boots. The strips were then sewn to the pants.

<big><h2>Step 1:</h2></big> Study actual images of the Red SPD Power Ranger by doing a google image search. 

<big><h2>Step 2:</h2></big> Gather material: Old clothing like Jaxon's red hooded jacket, Maya's old red pants, fabric remnants for the details make great found materials.  You'll also need paper, paint, and a sharpie.

<big><h2>Step 3:</h2></big> Deconstruct the clothing articles and build the outfit back up in Power Ranger style. Save the hood for the helmet, jacket sleeves and linings for the details.

<big><h2>Step 1:</h2></big> Find a cardboard box large enough to fit inside. Cut square windows into the box and line the interior with aluminum foil.

It is really hard to capture a tornado on film, especially when said tornado is a 4-year-old boy on a sugar high! Monica Erskine catered to her son's twister obsession by getting creative and making this costume a reality. She started with a simple black long sleeve tee and pants. She wrapped one pants leg and t-shirt with masking tape, creating an overall funnel shape. Then she attached random toys (tractor, barnyard animals, etc.) and leaves with short lengths of fishing line. Muss up your child's hair and brush a bit of brown eyeshadow "dust" on his face. Best part? After Halloween, the costume embellishments were easily removed so he could get plenty of wear out of the 4T shirt and pants.

To make this Princess Leia costume, Danyell Miller cut an old brown t-shirt into 1/2-inch wide strips and glued them onto a fabric headband as though the hair was parted down the middle. She dressed her baby Hali all in white, and then she tied the headband like a handkerchief on her head.

The oldest was the washer, complete with a door that opens, 'bubbles &amp; soap', plumbing attachments in back, and a real water feature [a squirt gun suspended inside that sprays through the 'soap dispenser']. The middle child was the dryer - her costume features a barrel door (made from a deli tray) with clothes that spin and dryer sheet hair ties! Both the washer and dryer are topped with soap, dryer sheets, and miscellaneous clothing, have labeled control panels with knobs, and plugs in the back. The smallest kid was the laundry basket, full of laundry, clothespins, and stain spray. A detergent cup headband tops off the ensemble.

To make this costume the Pearsons found an old box, cut it in half, and painted it. Once dry, they measured and cut holes out. Next, they gathered bottle caps and deli trays and covered them in tinfoil. They added knobs and laundry tubs to the machines and designed, printed, and added stickers to the control panel. Then, they Velcroed or glued on accessories such as detergent bottles, plugs, plumbing, and added clothing, bubble wrap bubbles, and cellophane soap tubs.  Finally, they cut a hole in a laundry basket and added sock suspenders, clothing, and old stain remover &amp; dryer sheet containers.  They slit the bottom of a detergent cup and added it to a headband.

<big><h2>Step 1:</h2></big> Find a box that is just a smidge bigger than your child's head. Cut out ample window for night-time trick or treating safety! Spray paint.

<big><h2>Step 2:</h2></big> Measure your child's arms and legs and cut dryer hose to fit. Using duct tape or aluminum foil tape, attach the arms to the end of a sparkly (read: futuristic) sleeveless sweater.

<big><h2>Step 3:</h2></big> Attach the legs to a pair of shorts that fit your child. This will make for easier sitting, walking etc, if the dryer hose doesn't go too far up.

Jessica Atkinson created this adorable owl costume for her young son this year for Halloween. To make the costume she first cut 'feathers' from felt, glued them onto cozy  sweatshirt and then took apart feather dusters and glued the feathers onto sleeves, starting at the cuff and working up to shoulder so that feathers overlapped.To make the owl hat she measured her son's head and made a cutout with two peaked ears. Put together with some cozy leggings she created a colorful and inexpensive costume everyone loved!

Using her 3-year-old's vision and a few repurposed items around the house, Mom Allisa whipped up this super hero costume that had him buzzing &amp; flying all around the house! Using leftover fabric pieces from her son's quilt, she created a cape and accessories, and appliqued a star onto a pair of thermal long-johns. For the mask, she cut up an old t-shirt ruined in the wash, which was perfect for cutting out eye holes. Up, up &amp; away!

<big><h2>HOW TO MAKE THIS COSTUME</h2></big>

<big><h2>Step 1:</h2></big> Cut two pieces of fabric into rectangle & then tapering into a cape shape. Appliqued stars and initial on all fabric pieces (cape, wrist bands, and shirt). 

<big><h2>Step 2:</h2></big> Used a plate to create round neck area of cape. Sewed the two pieces right sides together leaving opening to turn right side out.

<big><h2>Step 3:</h2></big> Created belt and wrist bands with long strips of same fabric. Sewed in a long 'tunnel' and then turned right side out. Attached them all with hook & loop closure. 

<big><h2>Step 4:</h2></big> Cut bottom off used t-shirt, the cut to create long strip. Cut away eye holes and slight tapering around nose.

Jessica G and her husband made these incredible costumes for their 4 and 6-year old Lego fans! Each crafty costume is simply made of recycled cardboard, styrofoam and paper, and took them 12 hours to create.

For over a year, Erin Corbett's son Miles has been saying he wants to be a pancake for Halloween, with his younger brother as the maple syrup. Using fabric Erin already had in her stash, she was able to come up with these two costumes. The pancake? Easy. The Syrup? A lot trickier than she thought, as her son Ozzie isn't walking yet and keeping him warm. Her solution was to line it with fleece, and voila!

Entering the Inhabitots Green Halloween Contest has become somewhat of a tradition for Lena's family, and in her family's 3rd(!) year entering, she created this incredible Statue of Liberty costume for her 5-year old Maya.

Dress: The dress has been made using naturally hand-dyed fabrics: Daddy's old T-shirt, Mommy's skirt and blouse. The base of the gown is a T-shirt Lena gathered at the sleeves to the shoulder - tying them with the ties originally taken from the skirt - and the ends of the sleeves have been adorned with frills from her blouse for added detail. Everything was hand-sewn, and the the draping was achieved by wrapping the skirt around the entire dress. The lining of the skirt is sewn at the bottom of the T-shirt for added length and detail.

Crown: The base of the crown is Maya's old plastic headband, and foam was detailed with grey marker by Maya.

Torch: A flashlight serves as the base of the torch, and foam was once again applied with added detail done by grey marker. The flames have been created with cut-outs from Kings' Hawaiian sweet bread packaging. The torch lights up by simply turning on the flashlight!

No book for our dear "Statue of Liberty" for Maya wanted a free hand for her treat bag!

Total spent on costume: $ 1.20 for foam.

Laura created this costume for her 7-year old son Michael mostly from recycled items. The suit came from the thrift shop, the structure underneath consistes of old cardboard boxes, empty 2 liter bottles for the shoulders, balled up newspapers, grocery bags and much more. Her son loved wearing it and received a lot of attention.

Katy Thiel started with an old box, painted it, added red duct tape and then glued popped popcorn to it to make this adorable box of popcorn. The equally impressive tricky gnome sitting on a toad stoll is made from old pool noodles covered in an old red blanket and an old sweatshirt.

This year Beth Langness dressed her kids up as Zelda &amp; Link. Beth created the Zelda costume from a dress pattern she had and designed her own vest and gauntlets based on  3"x5" picture. The shield &amp; princess accessories have been crafted foam - all hand-patterned, painted and assembled - while the swords were found at her local dollar store, and the belts and turtleneck bought at Goodwill. Her son used her daughter's tights (but don't tell him that!) and she created Zelda's trademark blue jewels from clear ones she already had, painting them with a faux stained-glass paint. But the best part she says? The kids will use them over and over!

Shawna Porter originally found a Monsters Inc. 'Sully' costume at a yard sale this summer for $5 that fit her oldest son perfectly. So this Halloween she had no choice but to turn her youngest son into Sully's best friend "Mike Wasowski." Shawna papier-mâchéd Mike's head/eye with old newspaper and painted it with the kids, while an outfit was sewn together from some old clothes, and the feet carved from foam that she found in the laundry room. On top of all of this, Shawna also found some purple cloth for her little Boo and sewed her up a costume too. In the end, while she spent less than $20 to outfit her three kids, she says the best feeling came when watching the little eyeball strut around on Halloween - her son refused to take off his costume all night! A Green Halloween indeed!

'Sully' costume at a yard sale this summer for $5, Mama Shawna had no choice but to turn her youngest son into his best friend "Mike Wasowski". She paper mached the head/eye with old newspaper, painted him together with her kids, sewed/pieced together some clothes for his arms and legs and carved his feet from some foam that she found in the laundry room. She found some purple cloth and sewed up a costume for her little Boo too. In the end, she spent under $20 for everything, but the best feeling came from watching the little eyeball strut around on Halloween--he would hardly take off his costume all night!

<div>Lena Sekine is a veteran when it comes to our Green Halloween Contest, where entering has become somewhat of an annual family tradition. For her 3-year old son Jaxon's first year in our competition, Lena created an adorable soldier costume from an actual BDU once worn by his grandfather - a retired officer. Lena deconstructed the original and used bits and parts for different parts of this outfit.</div>
Shirt:
The shirt is made of the pants of the original outfit, and completely self-designed and hand-sewn. Patches were taken from the original shirt and re-stitched to the new one. Lena also affixed buttons atop the shirt's velcro closure for added detail.

Pants:
The pants were cleverly sewn from the sleeves of the original shirt-piece, and remnants of original camo-fabric were used to create the holster for the knife. Accessory loops (grenade, etc.) on the pants were taken from the belt loops on the original pants.

Dog tag:
Lena used bits and pieces of old silver chains and linked them together with rings.

April Halpern used recycled boxes, cardboard, and clothes hangar to create the oven and door hinge on this clever costume. Complimented with the chef himself, his lightweight frying pan and tea kettle, her son's spooky menu consisted of: dressed duck (glow in the dark ducks dressed in halloween attire), witch's blood tea, pirate eye pie (sticky eyeballs) and a headless horseman's heart (which actually lit up and pulsated).

Olivia Atkisson used birch wood to create a replica of a vintage 1985 Cabbage Patch doll still in the box. The box is hand-painted, and 10-month old Leksi Faith is dressed up inside wearing an outfit handmade from a baby blanket her mom had as a child, along with a handmade yarn wig.

April Gober's two sons, Mason and Ty as a robot and a cow. It took her about 2 months, but she handmade both costumes! For the robot, she used a box and Christmas LED lights along with some other items she found in the hardware dept. at the store. Ty's cow costume was a pair of sweat pants and a sweat shirt that she painted large spots on.

Lindsay Leet sewed and constructed an adorable green grasshopper for Payton. Resourcefully, she was able to reuse past craft projects for some essential components -- the eyes are made out of a snowman she crafted last year for example.The majority of the costume is made from fabric, which she notes, "allows for a more breathable, comfortable, eco-friendly design."

Jorge Herrera used a recycled cardboard diaper box for body of the plane and other parts including the propeller that actually spins. Empty paper towel rolls created the steering column and an old dog frisbee was used for the steering wheel. Colored duct tape from Dad's tool box helped to hold it all together. And, the pilot's costume was made from old clothes and swimming goggles.

This oversized praying mantis, which is a whopping 9-feet long and weighs 11 pounds, isn't the first giant costume Michael Stocky has made, and he says creating them as a family project is half the fun. His daughter Sienna, who is a friend to all insects, wore the costume trick-or-treating this year. The head is made from a bicycle helmet, the eyes are metal strainers, the legs are wire repurposed from abandoned political campaign signs covered with pipe insulation, and the body is a metal dowel wrapped in plastic fencing and covered with fabric. The whole contraption is supported by an old backpack frame and a couple of braces made from shop-vac parts.

Inspired by recent reading about foxes, Jen C. decided to put together an all-natural, upcycled fox costume. Her daughter asked that it be soft, stretchy and warm,  so she upcycled and fulled a soft, thick wool sweater, adding a chevron print cotton ruffle below the drop waist skirt. The big tail is made from a piece of the same sweater (a sleeve!), stuffed with wool and carefully needle felted with fluffy white merino wool on the underside. The costume fits easily over other clothes, and tights or brown pants, if necessary - as in Ottawa, one never knows what Halloween night will bring in terms of weather! Jen then wrapped a fabric headband in thick merino wool, and added needle felted wool felt fox ears. The headband is flexible and very comfortable.

Laureen Edelstein made this Fall Forest Fairy costume for her daughter using mostly items from around the house including fabric remnants, ribbons, silk leaves, flowers, wire, a glue gun, glitter glue, wire hangers, rafia, recycled tights, and yarn. They both  had fun searching for useable items and creating the design together. After it was finished they had an outdoor "photo shoot" in their woods, the local pumpkin patch, and even with neighbor's horses. The Edelstein's green Halloween was a blast!

She used white yarn and hot glue to transform a skirt she already owned into a spider web, complete with fake flies and used a baby carrier and attached black tube socks filled with crumpled newspaper as extra legs and a piece of red felt for a black widow's hourglass.

Allison Zahorik's son Max wanted to be Pterri the Pterodactyl from Pee-Wee's Playhouse for Halloween. So the mom dyed an old sweatsuit she had in the house and used Polar fleece to created the head, wings, and tail. For the feet she cut open a pair of rubber gloves and stuffed them! Max was comfortable, the costume was cheap, and no one else was Pterri -- that's Halloween success!

This costume was dreamed up and named 'Samurai Suzume Bachi' by Callie Williams' son. The mask is made from a lamp shade, cereal boxes and paper clay, the body armor and shin guards are made from Formica laminate, the shoulder plates are made from cereal boxes, the kilt is fabric and foam, and the "maille" is a thrifted sweater. Suzume bachi is Japanese for "sparrow bee."

For her true Gruffalo fan, mom Liz Ockelton made her 3 year old son Toby this cute monster suit. The suit was handmade out of an old, ripped, green, duvet cover, and the tail was stuffed with an old pillow to create a large swinging tail with neon green poisonous spikes. Details such as the tail was made using a deflated, popped light sabre sword which Liz cut up into spikes and stitched in; the gloves were old gardening gloves; and the orange eyes were sewn onto a green hat. The costume took Liz an afternoon to make, and it was the envy of all at the party her son attended!

            [post_content] => This Halloween three-year old Aiden Mateo decided he wanted to be an owl, so with a little sewing and a tutorial from <a href="http://artfulparent.typepad.com/">The Artful Parent</a> and <a href="http://www.prudentbaby.com/">Prudent Baby </a>blogs, Michele de Jesus made these play wings and a costume that will get used well past Halloween! Michele upcycled 3 men's dress shirts from Goodwill and one new piece of fabric for the cloth feathers and the base of the wings. She decorated an old knit cap for the head and a shirt from consignment for the chest. A bit of sewing was involved, but Michele had fun!

<big><h2>HOW TO MAKE THIS COSTUME</h2></big>

<big><h2>Step 1:</h2></big> Michele upcycled 3 men's dress shirts from Goodwill and used 1 new piece of fabric for the cloth feathers, &amp; another new fabric for the base of the wings.

<big><h2>Step 2:</h2></big> Using a tutorial from The Artful Parent and Prudent Baby blogs she made a pattern then traced and cut out rows of scalloped cloth "feathers" and sewed them to the wings with a machine.

<big><h2>Step 3:</h2></big> She sketched a face from owl photos, chose fabrics, and sewed the face onto an old knit cap by hand. The shirt was from consignment.

<big><h2>Step 4:</h2></big> The wings are attached with elastic cord from her sewing stash, and tied at the wrists and neck. His brown pants also came from consignment.
