Free Universal Construction Kit by F.A.T. Labs Connects LEGOs to Tinkertoys and 8 Other Building Blocks
by Desmond Williams, 03/20/12The designers of the F.A.T. Labs Free Universal Construction Kit created a matrix of nearly 80 adapter bricks that enable complete interoperability between ten popular children’s construction toys: LEGO, Tinkertoys, K’nex, Lincoln Logs, Duplo, Krinkles, Zome, Zoob, Gears! Gears! Gears! and Fischertechnik.
Not only does this kit allow free play between a variety of your kid’s construction set, but also it’s free of cost. As with most free things, there’s a catch though. Don’t expect to get a bag full of goodies in the mail. Instead, what you will need to do is download the .STL design files at Thingiverse.com as a set of 3D models. You’ll can then’print’ the pieces yourself using a device such as the Makerbot (an inexpensive, open-source 3D printer). Either way, we think this set of connectors is a very cool idea that opens up a whole new world of building!
