Back in 2008 we published an article that provoked a lot of interest with our readers, and opened up a whole new world for me as the mother of a new baby. The article (written by our intrepid Dr. Mom writer Neelam Misra) was entitled ‘Elimination Communication: Skip Diapers Alltogether’ — and it chronicled the growing movement of moms in the U.S. who are starting to potty train their babies from birth and forgoing diapers entirely. Inspired by this article, I started putting my son (now 15 months) on the toilet around age 6 months. After all, the greenest approach to the whole diaper-debate is to do without (or do with less in my case).

3 Eco-Friendly Baby Wipe Choices

3 Eco-Friendly Baby Wipe Choices

Diapers are usually given the most attention and thought when it comes to greening baby’s changing regime. But baby wipes are equally important in terms of caring for baby and the health of the planet. Most disposable baby wipes contain alcohol and potent perfumes that can be very irritating to a baby’s delicate bottom. Many brands of baby wipes are also saturated in liquid solutions which leave excessive moisture on baby’s bum… and where there’s moisture, diaper rashes may soon follow. Here are 3 great, eco-friendly choices of baby wipes, which will be kind to your baby and easier on the earth.

DIY: Recycle Your Winter Wear – Turn Your Coat into Diaper Covers

The days are getting longer. The sun feels a bit warmer. Could it be that spring is in the air? Yes, it’s time for your kids to shed their frumpy winter coats and don smart tees and dresses (I trust that they are already doing this). Here’s what you can do with your outgrown, or worn out, winter coats… turn them into diaper covers!

Disposable Diaper Smackdown: Seventh Gen VS Bambo Natural

Disposable Diaper Smackdown: Seventh Gen VS Bambo Natural

There has been a lot of talk about re-usable diapers on Inhabitots lately and the debate is great considering the limited sustainable options available to parents in the US. While mums and dads across the pond do have a green option in Bambo Nature nappies (that’s UK-speak for diapers), the closest disposable diaper mass-marketed in America under the guise of being sustainable is the Seventh Generation brand.

Elimination Communication: Skip Diapers Altogether!

Elimination Communication: Skip Diapers Altogether!

As the debate rages on between cloth and disposable diapers, their is a lesser known third option that bypasses diapers alltogether: elimination communication (EC). In many third world countries, diapers are not an option. When Ingrid Bauer visited India, she noticed that mothers would often be carrying diaperless babies fearlessly and with what seemed liked virtually no “accidents.” How is this possible? In many cultures, mothers develop an incredible sensitivity to their babies’ elimination needs and can hold them over an appropriate receptacle when that need should arise. Ingrid Bauer has written a book on EC entitled: Diaper Free: The Gentle Wisdom of Natural Infant Hygiene.

GDIAPERS: We Review the Planet’s First Flushable Diaper

GDIAPERS: We Review the Planet’s First Flushable Diaper

You might have heard the frightening statistic that disposable diapers are the third largest consumer item in landfills and make up about 4% of all solid waste. While most of us want to be as environmentally responsible as possible when it comes to diapers; the prospect of spending hours scraping poop and laundering cloth diapers can be daunting when you’re exhausted in your new role as a mom or dad. Luckily, gDiapers have come to the rescue! If you haven’t yet heard of gDiapers, they are the world’s first flushable, compostable diaper, pairing the “green” attributes of cloth diapers with the convenience of disposables. As a new mom of a five week old baby, gDiapers have been a godsend for my time-constrained eco-aspirations. They are cute, comfy and most importantly, easy to use, and I can’t recommend them more highly.
