It’s no secret that here at Inhabitots we adore our owls. If you have a penchant for owls too, or simply want to give a big hoot by keeping it ‘green’ this holiday season, then this post is just for you - chock full of beautiful, kid-friendly, eco-owl paraphernalia, perfect for gift giving.
Baby drool… isn’t it the cutest thing? Their poor little teething mouths can’t help but issue gobs and gobs of the slimy stuff. And let’s not even talk about dinnertime. So, how do you keep all this cute, messy mess off of that fancy schmancy dress? Bibeez! Fashioned from recycled T-shirts, ReTeez offers a line of one-of-a-kind, double-sided bibs that have that au courant, ‘upcycled pop’ look (think Jeremy Scott).
Appliqued shirts are all the rage in children’s clothing boutiques, but as cute as they are, they often cost a pretty penny, and if you want a one-of-a-kind design, it’s going to cost even more! Luckily, appliqued shirts are very easy to make, and they’re a great way to extend the usefulness of clothing and recycle old, worn-out garments. They also make great holiday gifts!
If you have been wondering how to dress your busy little elf for the holidays, look no further, as Upa Project has some super cute and colorful slip on booties for tiny scampering feet. Handcrafted from supple synthetic leather, these soft and pliable gUgU booties are a great way to lovingly protect soft soles while also allowing them to expand and develop naturally. Add to this the fact that gUgUs come in a rainbow of yummy colors, and you will not only have sugarplums dancing in their heads but on their adorable feet, too.
With their cute and cozy Hug-Me Sweater and Squeeze-Me Mittens, New York eco children’s outfitter Oeuf encourages cuddling during the cold winter season. While the Hug-Me Sweater features two mittens sewn like pockets into the front to keep little ones’ hands warm, the Squeeze-Me Mittens encourage hand-holding by offering an adult-sized mitten with a a tiny little mitten sewn into the palm for your child’s hand to slip in. Both are made of 100% alpaca wool, a renewable fiber that is strong, lightweight, and hypo-allergenic, and both of these adorable items are now available through the Inhabitat Shop.
Every time I spot a baby out and about in my NYC neighborhood, that tot is sporting some type of fuzzy animal ears in the form of a cap or hood. So I’m guessing its not just me who is smitten with fuzzy animal ears - there appears to be some sort of baby bear ear trend taking the nation by storm. Still, that doesn’t stop me from loving baby animal ear garb and dressing my tot (see above) up like a little bear every chance I get. Sorry folks, I just can’t stop myself! The above baby bear ear cap is hand-crocheted by the talented Mrs. Amy Molhenhoff, and it is just about my favorite thing ever.
Chilly winter weather is blowing in, and it’s time to protect baby’s tiny head and cute little ears from the cold. You can keep your tot ‘green’ and warm with these adorable nature inspired organic hats that fight the chill factor and keep her looking totally precious. The 100% organic cotton Finch on Light Blue bonnet above is a cozy and sweet option sized for a 9 to 12 month old. Keep reading for more adorable toppers…
Eco cutey hipster Baby k* shoes were born out of designer Keiko Hirosue-Korolev’s desire to produce less waste in her shoemaking studio. She discovered that she could use fewer strips of raw materials by strategically cutting patterns for both her adult and baby shoes from the same squares of leather. “I guess next will be a collection of leather scrap jewelry,” says Keiko, half-joking.

Are you looking for the perfect earth-friendly baby shower gift? Maybe you’re starting to collect ideas for holiday baby gifts? Either way, the beautiful BabyBam Collection has got you covered. Or to be more accurate, the BabyBam Collection has got that baby you’re thinking of covered (and lathered) with their wonderful bamboo and organic cotton clothing sets, bamboo soaps, and organic balms.
Babysoy clothing for babies and toddlers is devastatingly cute, and smartly crafted from one of my favorite foods: soy. As a vegetarian, I have always appreciated soy as a source of protein, but I underestimated the possibilities inherent in soy, and I’m delighted to learn about its life as a fabric in the Babysoy clothing line. Not sure what gift to grab for the tiny eco-fashionista in your life whose wardrobe is brimming with clothing options? Gift her with Babysoy… her parents will be ’soy’ happy you did.
I know what girls like, I know what girls want. They want a dollhouse, and a couture blouse. They want some leggings, they’ll grow some Egglings. They want a princess, sans frilly excess. I know what girls want… girls want… girls want ‘green’.
Hip-hop and heroes and things that are furry. Bikes that go zoom, long-sleeved shirts free from worry. A wacky science show that’s inspiring. These are a few of boys’ favorite things:
Once thought of as a case strictly for charity, reusing clothing items has become an integral and environmentally savvy facet of green parenting. Now that Goodwill clothing is ‘hip’ (the D.C. stores have a Goodwill Fashionista on their payroll), and we are witnessing the advent of the ‘frugal teen’, can a shift in thinking among parents who once turned up their noses at the idea of hand-me-down or gently-used options for children be too far behind?
Soaking socks plus chilly ankles do not equal a fun time. Especially when those wet feet belong to a pint-sized, snowbound adventurer. Patagonia, a company with unquestionable environmental ethics, offers boots for kids that serve to snuggly wrap eco-friendly feet in sustainable materials that stay warm even in freezing temperatures.
Here’s a bird’s eye view into Little Lark, a company featuring adorable one-of-a-kind, eco-modern clothing for kids, and boasting environmentally conscious practices as well. At Inhabitots, we are birds of a feather who flock together with folks we believe are doing their part to create sustainable, compelling wares which both decorate and preserve our planet. Little Lark, based in Portland, Oregon, has us singing their praises for their beautifully designed, environmentally thoughtful kids clothing.
Drumroll please…. And now the moment you’ve all been waiting for: the announcement of the winners of our Inhabitots Green Halloween Contest! We had a ton of really great creative entries this year. From crafty home decor made from old aluminum cans, to awesome costumes, to clever Halloween treats - the ingenuity of our readers was on full display in this contest. Because the entries were so varied, we’re going to give out a number of different types of prizes instead of just a traditional 1st - 5th place. Without further ado, here are the winners of the Inhabitots Green Halloween Contest…
We hope you had a fun Halloween, and we want to say thanks to all of our crafty readers who sent in images of their cute home-made kids costumes. We were overwhelmed with great entries and were really impressed with everyone who took the time to send us something. We’ve narrowed the costumes down to our ten favorites, but we are having a hard time deciding our top three. Will you guys help us pick our winners? Please vote for your favorite costume below - you can vote for up to 3 submissions. And if you want to see more of the clever costumes that were submitted to us, check out our Green Halloween Galleryhere >
For the past couple weeks, we’ve been encouraging you all to get creative and DIY with your Halloween costumes this year. However, we recognize that many people don’t have the time to sit down and make costumes by hand. Happily, we’ve just spotted a great solution for those of you who plan to get store-bought outfits this year. CostumeStudio is a website carrying one of the world’s largest selections of Halloween costumes, and they support children in need around the world with donations to charity. This Halloween, Costume Studio is teaming up with StumbleUpon, MySpace Music, and Invisible Children to donate 100% of profits to help children in war-torn regions of Uganda.
Drumroll please…. We are thrilled to announce our new line of Inhabitots organic baby tees and onesies. Featuring ‘Habby’, our owly mascot, these adorable baby tees are made from 100% organic cotton and are hand-printed with eco-friendly, water-based inks. The tagline (with some fond nostalgia for the 70’s US Forest Service Campaign), reads ‘I give a hoot’. Show your support for Inhabitots and eco design by ordering one today - proceeds go to support Inhabitots and Inhabitat.
Breastfeeding is inherently environmentally friendly. Because of its popularity amongst the eco healthy yoga crowd, it blows my mind that it is so difficult to find organic nursing wear. Why do we need organic nursing wear, you might ask? This might not seem like a big deal to non-breastfeeding women, but I can tell you that when you are spending your days on your couch with leaky boobs, a slew of visitors coming through your house, and your baby permanently latched on - all you want to be wearing is something that is comfortable, breathable, organic, and allows you to nurse your baby while covering the rest of your body and offering some privacy. This doesn’t seem like a tall order, but good nursing wear is surprisingly hard to find. After much frustration trying out different ‘nursing tops’ (some uncomfortable, some too synthetic, some too skimpy), I finally found the solution for organic, comfy, stylish nursing apparel: bamboo nursing gear from Motherwear.
Breastfeeding moms know that when it comes to finding a fashionable and flattering nursing bra, the pickings are rather slim. Most nursing bras look extremely matronly, or fit in a way that causes breasts to look strange. With regard to the few appealing nursing bras available, many are uncomfortable, or don’t open easily with one hand, rendering them impractical, or even impossible to use for their intended purpose. Elle Macpherson has, thankfully, designed a comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, feminine nursing bra, which has restored my faith in the lingerie industry. Her lacy La Mere and Maternelle nursing bras are proof that moms can now be sexy and stylish in their breastfeeding endeavors.
When it comes to feeding your baby, breastfeeding is quite obviously the most eco-friendly choice. It is free, generates no waste, is a renewable resource, and requires no energy to produce (except of course for those calories your body is burning). It is also the most healthy food for babies to be consuming, as it is loaded with nutrients, immunities, and antibodies that can’t be replicated by formula or solid food. What you may not know, however, is that breastfeeding is also healthy for moms. Breastfeeding protects against breast cancer, uterine and ovarian cancer, as well as osteoporosis. Since October is Breast Cancer awareness month, we thought it an appropriate time to highlight the health benefits of breastfeeding for mother and child.
The Halloween theme is currently in full swing at Etsy; and this favorite online shopping destination which showcases the wares of freelance artisans, is bursting with adorable, eco-friendly Halloween goodies to scoop up for your tots. Now is the perfect time to look for a wonderful handmade ‘treat,’ or ‘trick’ if you’re so inclined.
Last year, while my son was still in preschool, a showy little kid came to school wearing an even more showy little number. It was a red slick, satiny, superhero cape, and my son immediately wanted one. The cape was sold at one of our local kids’ shops, but on inspecting the price tag I experienced a shock worse than a jolt from the super villain Electro: thirty bucks for a single piece of fabric? Not even if the lightning bolt stitched to the back were cast down by Zeus himself would I pay that price. Though I’m no Sally Seamstress, I decided we should make our own.
Whether or not you consider your little one to be angelic is really beside the point when you get them dressed up in this eco-cute Angel Wing Sweater by Oeuf designs. Even with adorably devilish antics and mischievous behavior on tap for the Halloween season, how can one resist this super-soft knit get up for your sweet, pink-faced cherub? We love that your baby or winged tot can continue to wear this adorable costume once the holiday passes. It is a simple way to green your Halloween costume party celebrations while also supporting fair trade artisans and families in other parts of the globe.
Searching for that perfect Halloween outfit for your wee one, but just can’t bring yourself to spend money on a silly store-bought pumpkin outfit that will only be worn once? Look no further than Speesees organic critter jackets. These eco-friendly animal inspired coats can be worn comfortably all throughout the year (take that silly pumpkin outfit), but can convert to a cute Halloween costume in a pinch. Of course, what tot wouldn’t want to wear these cuddly jackets everyday?
