Good news for moms who are breastfeeding! The IRS just announced that mamas will now be able to write off breast pumps and breast pump accessories on their taxes. The IRS states, “Breast pumps and supplies that assist lactation are medical care under § 213(d) of the Internal Revenue Code because, like obstetric care, they are for the purpose of affecting a structure or function of the body of the lactating woman.” Now families will be able to use pre-tax monies, such as a health savings account to purchase breast pumps and breast pump accessories. IRS Publication 502, Medical and Dental Expenses, is being updated to include this information.
