About
With the motto “Sustainable design for the next generation“, Inhabitots is the baby / parenting focused website in the Inhabitat family. The site was started during the summer of 2008 by Inhabitat.com founder Jill Fehrenbacher as she prepared for the arrival of her first child in August 2008. We recognize that the birth of a child is a turning point in people’s lives and the impetus for many people to ‘go green’ and really start researching the materials and production involved in all items that closely touch our lives. With this in mind, Inhabitots.com was created as a resource for parents, families, and anyone else interested in sustainable modern design for children. With a focus on design specifically targeted at babies, toddlers and kids, Inhabitots.com is a supplement to the wider focus of Inhabitat.com
THE INHABITOTS TEAM
Jill is the founder of Inhabitots.com, the founder and publisher of Inhabitat.com and a green designer living in New York City. She created Inhabitots in the summer of 2008 in preparation for the arrival of her first baby. She is an avid idealist, design junkie and believes firmly that becoming a parent doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style or ideals. At least not too much.
Abigail is an environmental artist, writer, and regular contributor to Inhabitat.com as well as other eco art and DIY blogs. As a mother of twin baby boys, she is doubling her efforts to try to make the world a more sustainable and visually inspiring place for all. Abigail currently divides her time between an urban nest in NYC, an organic farm in rural Italy, and a vibrant, up-and-coming community in Sofia, Bulgaria. When not crocheting with tencel, hemp, or handspun, she can be found gardening and dreaming about her next green enterprise.
Beth is the writer and founder of Petite Planet, a blog which focuses on eco-friendly living for families and informs parents of the best “green” choices for their babies and our planet. The birth of her now one year old daughter was her inspiration to take baby steps toward changing the world and preserving it for future generations. A former travel and spa writer, Beth swapped airline miles and body wraps for long stroller walks and quick showers. She is living her dream by being a mother and freelance writer.
Desmond Williams is a freelance writer and JUNO magazine columnist. He lives in Brooklyn, NY, is half of a mixed-race couple and father to a rambunctious, comedic, and inquisitive preschooler (all great fodder for parenting articles). His writing, with its injected wit and humor, tends to add a light touch to the general gravity of parenting. Desmond is currently working on his new book ‘Daducation’, due out this fall.
Andrea McMann is a freelance writer from rural Nebraska. She grew up in a family where attachment parenting, recycling, and living off the land were the norm. As an adult, she has come to appreciate the gentle, nurturing environment in which she was raised, and she and her husband strive to employ these early childhood lessons as they raise their own children, ages two and six. Andrea writes a weekly fitness column for Peekaboo Picks and shares her life’s adventures on her blog, Chocolate Fingerprints.
Neelam is a practicing physican, board certified in pain management and physical medicine, and certified in medical acupuncture. She believes in incorporating a holistic and integrative approach to patient care. She is the writer/creator of health and lifestyle blog Envivant.com. Her latest creative project is now 9 months old and crawling. Neelam loves to make things with her hands - hats, scarves, quilts, critters, mobiles, baby food, veggie delights…
Jennifer is a full-time freelance writer, problogger, and an unschooling mama of an amazing seven year old boy. Besides blogs, her writing background includes copy for non-profits, web projects, national magazine articles, and business proposals. She currently writes for a handful of green minded blogs including Tree Hugging Family, Slices of Green, Little Slices of Green, and Green Home Tips. She also covers topics like unusual structures, saving money, pregnancy, organizing, and more. Obsessions other than writing include Frisbee with her son, road trips (sadly not so green; but fun), books, music, chill people, and barrels of coffee. She recently moved back to the rainy Pacific Northwest after stints in Humboldt and the far too sunny Albuquerque.
