With school season upon us, your child is going to need a dedicated place to hit the books, create art and store his school gear. In short, your child needs his own desk. However, most eco-friendly desks for kids are way out of reach cost-wise for the average eco-family. Of course, you're getting the best quality, but at $580 to $700+ a pop for one sustainable desk, homework just got real expensive - more so if you have two or more kids. What's an eco-minded family to do when money is most definitely an object? Comprise a little. First of all, if you're willing to hunt, you can find a mostly decent eco-desk for under $300. Nope, it won't be an heirloom, but it will be safely made. Secondly, you can look to a couple of big box stores who offer semi-sustainable options. Partially eco-friendly is better than 100% particle board and toxic paint, you know? You can also go thrift store shopping, but be aware some used desks may have sketchy paint, so be ready for a desk makeover. In any case, for those of us who can't afford to spend thousands of dollars on a desk, here are 6 mostly sustainable desks for $300 or less. Homework just got a lot less scary -- for parents anyway.
Legare makes eco-minded desks that come flat-packed and can be assembled in 3 minutes, sans tools. They use sustainable materials like bamboo, engineered composite wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, and safe colors. There are various styles available – with a hutch, without. With a rolling file cabinet or not, and so on, but all are way more affordable than the average eco-desk. A major downside of Legare furniture for kids, is that it can be insanely hard to find – all in one place that is. Enter “Legare Kids Desk” into a Google search and many shops selling one color or another will pop up. In fact, to make it easy, I’ve rounded some up for you via the links below.
OFFI Sled Desk
For little ones in kindergarten through the elementary years, a simple desk may be all that’s needed. Thankfully, the OFFI Sled Desk is perfect. An adorable cross between old school desks and modern design, complete with a durable plywood desktop surface and seat, and a two railed wooden sled with ample leg room. There’s a storage space under the seat for your child’s books, papers and more. The Sled Desk was designed by Roberto Gil of Casa Kids, hence the beautiful lines, and made of Baltic Birch plywood and non-toxic painted MDF.
Child’s Maple & Cherry Work Bench
We love the heirloom quality of this Child’s Maple & Cherry Tool Bench. This may be one of your more affordable very sustainable choices too, made with real wood by the wonderful Camden Rose. The desk is finished in Three BEEautiful Bees Original wood polish and is extra sturdy. There’s a great work top, large enough for two children to work and play side by side plus a large center drawer to store supplies.
