The Lorax Movie Coming in March – See the Lorax Trailer
by Jennifer Chait, 11/15/11We’re so excited about The Lorax Movie. The Lorax, a classic Dr. Seuss book is one of our top green book picks. Of course we all know the tale – a greedy entrepreneur strips a forest bare of its stock of Truffula trees in order to manufacture material items, even though the Lorax warns him not to. A catastrophic end results as all the trees vanish and the animals leave the land. Now though, this story will be coming to life on the big screen so that a whole new generation can fall in love with the fuzzy little protector of trees. Created by Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, and starring Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Zac Efron, Betty White, Rob Riggle and Taylor Swift, this 3-D CG animated feature will be hitting theaters on March 02, 2012.

This week the Sierra Club launched an new in your face advertising campaign on Washington, DC’s Metro (subway) system. The clever advertisements offer images of pregnant mama bellies along with information about the excessive levels of mercury most children are exposed to. This bright new ad campaign will be featured prominently in a full 160 cars throughout the Metro system. Massive ad exposure on this topic is a good thing. According to Sierra Club, “As few as 1 in 12, and as many as 1 in 6, American women have enough mercury in their bodies to put a baby at risk. That means that each year more than 300,000 babies are born at risk of mercury poisoning.” These ads specifically highlight the dangerous levels of mercury pollution coming from coal fired power plants and the need to institute strong protections for Americans, protection that is moving incredibly slow.

Writing about choosing adoption as an eco-friendly decision is a touchy topic. I’ve thought about how to start this post for months: while I anxiously awaited to see the first picture of our daughter; while I lay in bed, jet-lagged but unable to sleep as the dogs and goats barked and bleeted at each other in the streets of Addis Ababa; and during the tortuously long weeks we waited for the U.S. Embassy to approve our daughter’s visa to enter into the United States. There were, of course, many reasons why we chose to adopt: the desire to be a multi-racial family, to give a home and a family to one of the 5 million children in Ethiopia who needed one, even an unexplained feeling since I was very young that adoption would be a part of my life. But truthfully, the environmental reason behind choosing adoption was a predominant one.LOTS MORE GREAT GREEN DESIGN STORIES HERE...
