‘The Breastmilk Baby’ Doll Now Available in the U.S.

by , 07/13/11

breastmilk baby, the breastmilk baby, breastfeeding baby doll, baby doll who breastfeeds, berjuan toys, wacky toys, wacky dolls

Back in 2009, we reported on a bizarre breastfeeding baby doll, Bebe’ Gloton, which we believed added to the unwarranted taboo that surrounds nursing in the American culture — read our opinions here. Re-named ‘The Breastmilk Baby,’ this interactive toy, which makes sucking noises to mimic what a real infant sounds like when breastfeeding, is now available in the States. Promoted with taglines the “magic of motherhood,” (although we all know the art of breastfeeding is hardly a magical undertaking, but a learned skill for both mother and child) and “a lesson for life,” this doll enables pre-pubescent girls to strap on pasties to denote nipples (referred to as a “fashionable halter top”) and pretend to nurse a baby, “just like mommy.”

Would you buy this breastfeeding baby doll for your young daughter?

  • 119 Votes Yes! I think this doll is a great teaching tool to promote nursing.
  • 169 Votes No! I think the concept behind this doll really sucks.

CDC Breastfeeding Report Card Shows Best and Worst Breastfeeding States

Percentage of Children Who Are Breastfed at 6 Months of Age

The 2010 Breastfeeding Report Card issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that more women than ever are trying to breastfeed. Recent CDC data collected in the new report card shows that a full 3 out of every 4 new U.S. mamas attempts to breastfeed her newborn. In fact, the United States has now met the Healthy People 2010 national objective for breastfeeding initiation. As you can see from the map above, in many states women are still breastfeeding at the 6-month mark. States featuring some of the best breastfeeding rates include Vermont, Oregon, Hawaii, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, California, Alaska, Washington and Colorado. The message that breastfeeding is the most healthy feeding option for babies must be sinking in. Sadly, like most report cards, this report shows that there’s room for improvement. Many states have truly abysmal breastfeeding rates and need major improvements, including Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana, Oklahoma, South Carolina and West Virginia. Keep reading to see what the U.S. is failing at when it comes to breastfeeding rates.

New Tailpipe Controls Do Little to Improve Air Quality Inside School Bus Cabins

When you’re shuffling the kids onto the big yellow school bus every morning, the last thing you should be thinking about is air pollution. While we trust bus drivers to get our kids safely to school, the diesel-guzzling busses spew toxic tailpipe emissions into the air. And even though some school districts have taken the pollution seriously, and are installing catalytic converters in their vintage fleet of vehicles, these tailpipe controls only help the air pollution levels outside the bus, not inside where children are riding and breathing the air on the way to school. In fact, a new study found that the ratio of pollutants inside the bus cabin can be three to 15 times more emission-heavy than outside city air.

Milk Truck Mobile Breastfeeding Unit Calls Attention to Moms’ Right to Breastfeed in Public

Milk Truck Mobile Breastfeeding Unit Calls Attention to Moms’ Right to Breastfeed in Public

Breastfeeding battles have been popping up all over the news recently – Forest Park, Georgia attempted to ban breastfeeding in public for kids older than two; and a bus driver in Detroit asked a breastfeeding mother to get off the city bus. Unfounded? Yes, but whether it’s a law in the making or an evil eye from a passerby, breastfeeding moms don’t always have it easy in when it’s time for a feeding in public. That’s why artist and mom Jill Miller designed the Milk Truck, a mobile breastfeeding unit that’s part public service and part performance art to be on display at the 2011 Pittsburgh Biennial at the Andy Warhol Museum this fall.

Do you think the Milk Truck is a good way to bring attention to the right to breastfeed in public?

  • 70 Votes Yes. I'd love to see this boob mobile in my hood!
  • 12 Votes No. It's just another place for women to breastfeed behind closed doors.

Home Births Rise by a Dramatic 20 Percent

Home Births Rise by a Dramatic 20 Percent

Home births haven’t been commonplace in the United States for a good long while. In fact, home births even experienced a gradual decline from 1990 to 2004. Now though, new research shows that the number of home births have shot up dramatically since 2004. Researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently found that in 2008, about 28,357 babies were born at home. Keep in mind that this only represents around 0.67% total USA births, but it’s still the highest percentage of home births since 1990 and shows that home births have risen a full 20% in recent years.

What do you think of home births?

  • 23 Votes I had one and am so glad I did!
  • 16 Votes I'm pregnant and planning a home birth.
  • 24 Votes I'd rather be at a hospital just in case something goes wrong.

Study: Cow, Goat and Human Breast Milk Can Contain up to 20 Chemicals

Study: Cow, Goat and Human Breast Milk Can Contain up to 20 Chemicals

They say milk does a body good, but did you know a glass of the white stuff can contain up to 20 drugs and chemicals that are common in medicine, in addition to hormones? This goes for milk across the board – a study in Spain and Morocco on cow, goat and human breast milk has revealed the presence of a laundry list of foreign chemicals, though cow milk had far and away the largest concentration of chemicals. Using highly sensitive testing, the scientists’ research has proven the presence of synthetic chemicals in varying levels of the food chain – both in the breast milk we produce and the other types of milk we consume.

Does this study make you think twice about giving your kids milk?

  • 15 Votes Yes. I'm going to switch to soy or other non-animal milk.
  • 49 Votes No. I still think that milk's nutritional benefits outweigh the findings of this study.

GREEN RANT: Can Childhood Prohibitions Lead to Binge Consumption?

GREEN RANT: Can Childhood Prohibitions Lead to Binge Consumption?

Do guarded green parents inadvertently push their kids toward binge consumption? This is a question I posed to myself while sitting at a homey table in a wood paneled diner, considering my own overreaching fathering methods. Waiting for our orders to arrive, my wife Liza and I had attempted to make small talk with our 6-year-old to no avail. Devon’s gaze was fixed on the diner’s television set. It was spewing candy-coated, technicolor hogwash interspersed with undifferentiated marketing hype; and when Devon suggested that we should get him the gun-toting, steroid pumping action figure that had just been advertised, I shot a look of despair in Liza’s direction. “Well, what do you expect? He doesn’t watch TV at home,” she quipped.

Do you think bringing your child up with a minimalist, eco-friendly or vegetarian lifestyle will lead them to do the opposite later?

  • 29 Votes No.
  • 57 Votes Maybe, but that doesn't mean I'm going to change my parenting style.
  • 20 Votes Yes.
