Breaking News: Cell Phones Linked to Cancer Says World Health Organization

by , 05/31/11

cell phone, cell phone may cause cancer, cell phone radiation, cell phone safety, cell phone use, blog, green tech, kids cell phone, safe cell phone, World Health Organization

Here at Inhabitots, we’ve long debated whether or not cell phones and iPhones are harmful or a useful tool. In fact 276 of Inhabitots readers (and counting) say that they let their kids use cell phones or iPhones. Today, the debate clears up a little, as the World Health Organization (WHO) along with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), have officially classified the radiofrequency electromagnetic fields used by cell phones as cancer-causing to humans. In their new report (pdf), WHO states that cell phone use is significantly linked to an increased risk for glioma, a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer.

Now that WHO says cell phones and cancer are linked, should kids use cell phones?

  • 83 Votes I don't want my child using a cell phone at all.
  • 58 Votes I think my child can use a cell phone in moderation.
  • 14 Votes I'm not sure what I think.

Genderless Baby Storm Stocker Ignites a Firestorm with Parents, Media

by , 05/30/11

genderless baby, storm stocker, gender neutral baby, transgender baby

A Toronto couple has ignited a media firestorm after deciding to conceal the sex of their baby, Storm Stocker. Inspired by the 1978 book X: A Fabulous Child’s Story by Lois Gould, Kathy Witterick and David Stocker have decided to hold off from letting the world know their baby’s gender and have only allowed their two older sons and midwives look beneath Storm’s diaper since the New Year’s Day birth. For the parents, this is an opportunity to explore gender freedom, and allow their child to develop free from the potentially harmful pink and blue stereotypes. Their email announcing the birth stated, “We decided not to share Storm’s sex for now — a tribute to freedom and choice in place of limitation, a standup to what the world could become in Storm’s lifetime.”

What do you think about allowing a baby to be 'genderless'?

  • 738 Votes I think it is great! A baby doesn't care about gender, and it's a great way to buck harmful stereotypes.
  • 298 Votes I think this is a bad idea - this child should not be a guinea pig for its parents social beliefs. Babies should come out of the womb wearing pink or blue!
  • 129 Votes I'm not sure how I feel about this

Oyster Mushrooms Can Break Down Disposable Diapers in 4 Months

Oyster Mushrooms Can Break Down Disposable Diapers in 4 Months

Disposable diapers. They’re one of the biggest contributors to overflowing landfills, piling up at a rate of 1 ton of trash per kid per year. And the worst part is that not a single disposable diaper ever made has yet decomposed. It is estimated that disposable diapers take 500 years to break down, which means the very first disposable diaper created 40 years ago is still sitting in the dump, holding court with all the other sposies that have since joined it. But now, a scientist named Alethia Vázquez-Morillas from the Autonomous Metropolitan University in Mexico City has found a way to turn that 500-year span to a mere 4 months, by using oyster mushrooms to accelerate the breakdown. How?

Kiri Martin’s Adorable Paper Pulp Piggy Bank Teaches Kids How to Save

Kiri Martin’s Adorable Paper Pulp Piggy Bank Teaches Kids How to Save

As simple as they may seem, there is a reason piggy banks have maintained their status as a kid and adult favorite throughout the years - not only are they incredibly adorable, they also teach little ones the value of money and saving. That's why we were so excited to see designer Kiri Martin take this iconic toy and create a sustainable version of it out of paper pulp. Named Bergdorf (perhaps an allusion to where young savers can spend their nesteggs if they accumulate enough cash), the paper piggy uses minimal materials and can be ripped apart and recycled when it's time for kids to retrieve their coins.

Georgia City Bans Breastfeeding in Public for Children Older Than Two

Georgia City Bans Breastfeeding in Public for Children Older Than Two

Enjoy it while it lasts kid...

[/caption]

Forest Park, GA has issued a new law that makes it illegal to breastfeed any child older than two years of age in public, calling the act public indecency. wsbtv.com notes, “Previously, the city only had a public indecency ordinance that covered adult entertainment businesses.” Whew, I’m glad to hear that the city will now be safe from both adult entertainment and breastfeeding. What’s almost as disturbing as the new law though, is that the majority of Forest Park council members, who I’m guessing voted for this new law, are women.

What do you think about Forest Park banning breastfeeding of two-year-olds

  • 9 Votes Awesome - this new law rocks. I'm so sick of seeing boobs everywhere!
  • 282 Votes This is an extremely stupid law - way to go Forest Park.
  • 8 Votes I don't care.
