Vote to Empower Kids with Type 1 Diabetes

by , 12/10/10

This month the Pepsi Refresh Project is giving $1.3 million away in grants to worthy humanitarian and environmental efforts across the country. A lot of these initiatives are focused on raising healthy kids and this month we’d like to urge you to vote for the dStory project. It’s a plan put together by the Diabetes Education and Camping Association that will help to raise awareness about type 1 diabetes and empower children living with the disease — type 1 is the insulin dependent kind. Rates of diabetes are on the rise around the world — some researchers are linking this to environmental toxins — but the realities of the disease aren’t widely known. By casting your vote you’ll be helping kids live long healthy lives by sending them to diabetes camp and giving them the chance to tell the world about what it’s like to be a kid with diabetes. You can vote once a day every day in December!

Baby Sign Language Basics: 10 Starter Signs to Teach Your Infant

Baby Sign Language Basics: 10 Starter Signs to Teach Your Infant

Even before your baby says his first words, he gets the gist of what everyone is saying, and by the time he's about 8 months old he should have the motor skills needed to learn basic sign language. Yes, we know, right now it seems he thinks his hands are best used for sticking in his mouth, or for dropping the sippy cup from the high chair, but think about when he waves bye-bye or points at different objects in the room. Baby sign language is within his reach and it can help him communicate with you now, before he starts talking. Signs can be super helpful when you want to know if your baby is hungry or if you want to get an early start on potty training. Researchers also say baby sign language can help strengthen the bond between parent and child, and reduce temper tantrums. Plus, studies suggest that babies who are exposed to signing early have bigger vocabularies earlier, and signing as an infant may lead to higher IQs. So what are you waiting for? Get started with ten common baby signs from BabySignLanguage.com.

Babies on Diets: A Distrubing New Trend

Babies on Diets: A Distrubing New Trend

Babies come in all shapes and sizes, and for some, that means chubby legs and a big of healthy baby fat. But more and more parents are going to extremes and doing the unthinkable — putting their babies on diets. Several news outlets have recently reported that some parents are restricting their babies’ caloric intake and in one especially disturbing case, starving and feeding laxatives to their baby girl to keep her thin. Of course your baby’s health is of utmost importance, and with childhood obesity doubling in the past 20 years, it’s certainly not a path you want your kid to go down, but this approach is downright disturbing.
