The Koru Wishbone bike combines all the eco-friendly features we love along with a sweet new Maori-inspired design by Shane Hansen. Wishbone notes that this new design symbolizes, “New life and relationships, calling on families globally to celebrate diversity, build community and work together for a bright future.” With environmentally sustainable design features — 60% post-consumer recycled plastic, sustainably managed woods, eco-friendly bonding agents and non-toxic paints — this innovative 3-bikes-in-1 ride, now with Hansen’s artistry, really is the most stylish pre-bike in town.

Today’s kids are growing increasingly sophisticated, and there’s no reason that the spaces they inhabit shouldn’t reflect the same sentiment. Last weekend this amazing multifunctional play structure system, dubbed ‘Playgoda‘, made its debut  in LA at Dwell on Design. The Playgoda, part of the Modern Family zone at Dwell on Design this year, is a whimsical and charming playhouse, constructed with Finland Birch, a polycarbonate slide and nylon rope. But as unique and distinct as this Playgoda appears, this creation by Gregg Fleishman is certainly not a stand-alone structure – Fleishman has been envisioning and crafting a unique community of flat-pack playhouses for years!

New research from Tulane University is shedding a positive light on hurricanes Katrina and Rita. According to the study, as the two hurricanes flooded New Orleans they seem to have buried lead-contaminated soil, leading to a significant decrease in children’s lead poisoning. This is great news for a city seemingly only filled with bad news lately, because in the past New Orleans has been classified as one of the most lead-polluted cities in the country. The new study found that almost all neighborhoods saw soil lead levels fall by about 50 percent. Before the hurricanes, 15 of 46 neighborhoods exceeded the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality‘s standards. Now only 6 neighborhoods registered too high.

Synthetic Food Dyes Equal A Rainbow of Risks

Synthetic Food Dyes Equal A Rainbow of Risks

Synthetic and harmful dyes are found in all sorts of food items. From granola bars to fruit roll-ups to M&Ms to Kraft salad dressings to Kid Cuisine frozen meals and more. In fact, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) notes that each year manufacturers pour about 15 million pounds of synthetic dyes into the foods that kids are most likely to eat. Brightly colored breakfast cereals, over the top neon fruit drinks, and vividly colored candies are all mass marketed to kids and we’re buying those colors up; a dangerous move according to CSPI’s newest report, “Food Dyes: A Rainbow of Risks.” The report calls out the serious health concerns associated with the nine currently approved dyes used in conventionally produced food products.

7 Top Tips for a Green, Safe & Healthy Pregnancy

7 Top Tips for a Green, Safe & Healthy Pregnancy

Experiencing a healthy pregnancy is no doubt a glorious experience (once the fog of morning sickness lifts!), but there may also be a lot of confusion with regard to the "dos, don'ts and how-tos" of maintaining a green, safe and healthy pregnancy -- especially when the world around us is becoming increasingly filled with disturbing news such as most canned food contains the harmful chemical BPA and that studies prove BPA can cross the placenta from mom to negatively impact her developing fetus. Add to that the knowledge that pesticides on produce and toxic cleaning products also adversely affect pregnant women and their precious unborn babes, and it may make you want to pack it all up and move to a remote farm to grow your own food. (At least, that's how I feel at 7 1/2 months pregnant). Here are 7 tips for a green pregnancy.

Schools and Daycare Are Top Sources of Kids’ Toxic Chemical Exposure

Schools and Daycare Are Top Sources of Kids’ Toxic Chemical Exposure

Even if you think you’re doing good by reducing chemicals in your home, kids may be getting even bigger doses of toxic dust at school or daycare. New research from the University of Birmingham in England found that daycare centers and classrooms are a significant source of exposure to flame retardants and polycholorinated biphenyls (PCBs) for children from 1 to 6-years-old. In many cases, readings were higher than those from car dust or house dust. Food and air pollution are often the biggest sources of chemical exposure, but inadvertent dust ingestion is a risk particular for kids who crawl on floors and often stick their fingers in their mouths.
