Crafty green-minded architect and grandfather, Ron Aarons AIA, inspired us with a great example of innovative sustainable design for kids: the geodesic dome building blocks shown above are constructed entirely of used plastic bottles otherwise destined for a landfill. Aarons’ Toys from Trash concept teaches kids about recycling/upcycling while laying the conceptual groundwork for children to learn the fundamentals of green design. As if that weren’t awesome enough, Toys For Trash also encourages cutting back on consumerism and using what you already own for entertainment and enrichment!

Acid Added to Baby Food Jars Contributes to Infant Acid Reflux Issues

Acid Added to Baby Food Jars Contributes to Infant Acid Reflux Issues

It’s no secret that jarred baby food, even the organic variety, is far from perfect. Last year the Children’s Food Campaign discovered that a vast majority of jarred baby food, (including baby food from many top-notch organic brands), contains extra trans fat, sugar and sodium your baby doesn’t need — not to mention the BPA found in the metal lids of glass jars of baby food. Now, like a cherry on a very unhealthy cake, Dr. Jamie Koufman and Dr. Jordan Stern, authors of The Reflux Diet Cookbook, have found that some conventional and organic baby food companies add acids to their jarred baby food as a preservative. Added acid like citric acid, ascorbic acid and even folic acid can increase the acidity in your baby’s diet and thus may result in increased incidents of baby reflux. Yikes! Read on to see which baby food brands and jarred baby foods tested highest in their acid levels…

PLAY Children’s Furniture Designed by Jesper K. Thomsen

Handmade and manufactured in Denmark in a local carpenter’s shop with beech wood and bright eye catching finishes of yellow and green, PLAY furniture is sure to capture any child’s attention. PLAY is part of New Danish Modern, Normann Copenhagen’s Danish furniture collection that fuses traditional Danish craft and modern design. Of his vibrant and colorful collection for children, Jesper K. Thomsen says, “Children’s furniture must be for children, rather than small copies of adult furniture.” PLAY is exactly this — furniture and play items that appear to have been pounded together in a garage with mom and dad, but with beautiful, clean and modern lines that hint otherwise. This homemade, randomly assembled look is all part of Thomsen’s design plan, and the result is cheerful and unique furniture pieces that are sure to be treasured by children and adults alike.
