Cate & Levi Wall Art Made from Reclaimed Wool
by Julie Seguss, 02/28/10
From Cate & Levi, the same eco-dad designer that creates sweet plush toys, zoo cubes and puppets from reclaimed wool, comes a collection of framed animal wall art that’s perfect for baby’s nursery. Like the fab finds we told you about before, each one is handmade from reclaimed wool in Toronto, Canada. Every creation from hippo to dog is one- of-a-kind since it’s made from whatever wool scraps are available. The animal art is mounted on natural cotton canvas and framed in a 9 x 9 inch solid wood frame.
Fruit-Colored Maple Teethers by Ticki Tacki Toys
by Jasmin Malik Chua, 02/27/10All-natural doesn’t have to mean sticking to blah neutrals like beige, brown, and… more brown. These colorful teethers by Ticki Tacki Toys get their saturated pink and purple hues from cranberries and beets instead of potentially suspect dyes. Made from raw maple, then finished with beeswax and flaxseed oil, the gum-soothing toys come in different shapes to keep things interesting: a circle, an octagon, and a set of stacking squares.

Ever since the train ruins were forsaken in 1986, the construction has been left as-is, and concrete columns have stood without purpose… until this month, when the Ghost Train park opened free of charge to jubilant attendees who indulged in merriment via park equipment made from recycled materials.

Eco-Punk Lego ‘Crawler Town’ by Dave DeGobbi
Brick-loving kids will be bowled over by designer Dave DeGobbi’s new Lego concept, Crawler Town. The story of Crawler Town begins with an end… the inhabitants of this steam-punk world have exploited the earth’s natural resources and can only find life’s simple luxuries “like pizza, fresh vegetables and beer” while vacationing at moving structures like Crawler Town. Yes, the environmental lesson this toy teaches is a pretty dark one (it’s best suited for older kids) but in all of this, forced by necessity, the townspeople have figured out a more energy efficient means of survival.

La Casa de Botellas: The Santa Cruz Family’s Plastic Bottle Palace
Like a crystal castle for a post-ecopalyptic world, Casa Ecologica de Botellas Plasticas (or La Casa de Botellas) is a dream home that only an extremely creative, environment-friendly mind could conjure up. Constructed from thousands of PET plastic bottles, possibly headed for improper disposal, the home created by the Alfredo Santa Cruz family in Puerto Iguazu, Argentina, is “a tool for promoting ecological and social responsibility.” The Santa Cruz’s, “successfully designed their portable structures to be accessible, simple, and creative down to the last detail.” As if the ‘big bottle house’ wasn’t whimsical enough, Alfredo also designed a smaller playhouse out of bottles for his young daughter. See exactly how many plastic bottles it took to build La Casa de Botellas after the jump!

Makedo Kit Encourages DIY Craft & Toy Making via Creative Recycling
Australian company Makedo recently made their US debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York City. Their kits up the ante on “making do” with what you have around the house to whip up original crafts and toys. The concept is simple — inside the recycled cardboard tube you’ll find a bunch of recyclable plastic pins, hinges, clips, a kid-safe cutting tool and an inspiration poster. Kids are instructed to scavenge around the house to find boxes, egg cartons, fabric scraps, construction paper, jar lids, bubble wrap and more. Then, using what’s inside the Makedo tube, they turn what would otherwise be trash into cool art projects — from the simple to the elaborate to the grandiose. Watch the video after the jump to see the Makedo kit in action.
