by , 08/31/09

gifts define, bird mobile, oeko-tex, real wool mobile, wood mobile, wool, wool felt

The handmade Counting Sheep Deco Mobile available at Gifts Define is almost motivation enough to have another baby. Seeing these adorable counting sheep makes me think, “Eh, diaper duty… midnight feedings… not that bad – at least I could count the sheep while I’m at it.” Seriously though, these sweet counting sheep will look amazing in a nursery. Handmade with white and cotton cream colors of real wool felt (OEKO-Tex Standard 100 Certified), these woolly sheep circle around a puffy white cloud, and feature cute, sleepy and smiley expressions and glass beaded eyes. Each hangs from an ecru natural cotton string, and balances on a hand-finished, hand-crafted wooden hanger. A nice bold wooden square holds everything together and a swivel hook is at the top for hanging. It’s all wrapped up perfectly for gift giving in a ribbon-tied handmade fabric bag with a gift card. If sheep don’t make you swoon, wait until you see Gifts Define’s bird mobile!

Rub A Dub Dub, Breast Milk Soap in the Tub

Rub A Dub Dub, Breast Milk Soap in the Tub

We are major advocates of breastfeeding here at Inhabitots; and we were intrigued to see that breast milk not only nourishes your little one, but may be just the ticket to getting squeaky clean as well. Milk soap is not a new idea by any means; it’s been said that milk based beauty products date back to Cleopatra’s time… but breast milk soap? Breast milk soap in particular is far less common, but if you can spare some of your expressed milk, it might just make the perfect soap for your baby.

Swallow Your Baby’s Placenta One Pill at a Time!

Swallow Your Baby’s Placenta One Pill at a Time!

The notion of eating your baby’s placenta has always been tied to strange, gag-inducing, sensationalized stories. You probably caught wind of the celebrity rumor that Tom Cruise claimed he would eat his newborn’s placenta, and when the concept of digging into a placenta meal is mentioned in social circles, the typical response is a wince, a gag, and arms waving ‘no!’ But placentophagy, (eating the placenta) is being increasingly marketed to the mainstream as a practice for new mothers to help them stave off postpartum depression and recover more quickly after giving birth. DIY Placenta Encapsulation kits are now available for use in the privacy of one’s home. Placenta Benefits.info is one website that sells this kit, alongside a slew of convincing reasons to start swallowing your baby’s placenta one pill at a time.

Baumraum’s Froschköenig Treehouse

Baumraum’s Froschköenig Treehouse

Your kids may not be the only ones who want to escape off into a treehouse. This treehouse by German designer, Baumraum, could be a parent’s dream backyard getaway spot too. The Froschköenig Treehouse, is a one-room, prefab sleep heaven built from tatajuba wood with a curved zinc roof. With large windows on either side and slim side windows, the interior is naturally-lit, making it seem larger than it really is. Built on bamboo stilts above a shallow pool of water, the Froshköenig Treehouse has an almost cartoonish feel, but is still stylish and sophisticated enough for adults.

NEW! Recycled Cardboard Collection from Designer Ben Blanc

NEW! Recycled Cardboard Collection from Designer Ben Blanc

We had the pleasure of interviewing designer Ben Blanc on Inhabitots, and we’re excited to report about four new recycled cardboard projects coming out of his studio. Blanc shares, they “have just been released at the NYGF which I designed exclusively for Cardboardesign.” There’s a clever room divider (“Each piece is a single die cut shape that the user can slot together to form a wall”), a set of scratch ‘toys’ for kitties that I think could pass as toys for kiddies (“I’m sure they would look great in a kids room”) and a fold up Cardboard Shark and Puppet TV set specifically intended to inject creativity into playtime activities.

INTERVIEW: Corkels Toy Designer, Ben Blanc

INTERVIEW: Corkels Toy Designer, Ben Blanc

The age old adage of ‘keeping things simple’ is a core philosophy of many designers. Upon reviewing the catalog of upcoming projects from Ben Blanc’s studio, it’s clear that his toys and handiwork boast simplicity coupled with classic elements of timeless style and appeal. Compelled by his work after a visit to a DUMBO, Brooklyn design store, where I came across Ben’s classic, clean, push/pull Corkels toys (made from recycled wood chip cork), I contacted Ben to ask him a few questions about the inspiration behind his creations.

Back to School: Mother/Son Review of Citizenpip Lunch Kits

Back to School: Mother/Son Review of Citizenpip Lunch Kits

My son Cedar is the pickiest child alive… so when his school lunch box went by the wayside this summer, a feeling of dread grew inside of me knowing we’d have to find a new one. I picked out a bunch of eco-friendly lunch boxes, only to have Cedar snub them all. Lately, he’s been using a bamboo lunch sack for camp, and while it is eco-friendly, it’s also inappropriate for long-term use because it has no insulation. Then I heard about a new waste-free-lunch system – the Soup to Nuts Kit from Citizenpip. The Soup to Nuts kit is an all inclusive, reusable, waste-free lunch kit that puts a stylish end to disposable lunch trash woes. Read on to learn what earth-loving Cedar and I thought of Citizenpip’s reusable lunch kits.

$25 Incubator Designed to Save Babies in Developing Countries

The motto of Inhabitots’ parent site Inhabitat is: ‘design will save the world.’ Helping save the world one newborn at a time is Embrace, a $25 infant incubator designed to sustain premature and low birth weight babies, 80% of which are born in rural areas in developing countries. The cozy, sleeping bag shaped ‘Embrace’ is a thermoregulator which regulates a newborn’s temperature, subbing in for an inaccessible $20,000 traditional hospital baby incubator. Embrace was designed by ‘Extreme Affordability’ students at Stanford Institute of Design with the intent of creating a low cost baby incubator which could regulate body temperature without electricity or moving parts. Read on to learn how Embrace works.
