While adults are arguing about whether climate change is even a reality, one 15-year old girl is taking the reins to help reverse the effects of global warming through the proper education of a new generation. Michael Gove, Britain’s Secretary of State for Education, has removed the subject of climate change from the curriculum for students under the age of 14. In response, Esha Marwaha, a student from the Heathland School in Londoon has created a petition to force the government to keep climate change on the education menu, and the petition has already received nearly 24,000 signatures, and counting.

As reported by The Guardian, currently, the only thing students under the age of 14 are required to learn in school is a brief mention about carbon dioxide and its impact on climate in chemistry class. It’s a move that has many people crying foul, citing political interference taking precedent over science.

Instead of buying into the put-your-head-in-the-sand mentality, Marwaha decided that if the people in charge wouldn’t fix the problem, she would take matters into her own hands. According to Marwaha,

Climate change is the most pressing and threatening issue to modern day society. Through lack of understanding from generations before us, we are having to fix it. And how can we do this without education? However, yet again, our government – part of the generation who bear more responsibility for this problem intend to not only fail to act on climate change themselves, but to obscure the truth, and any chance we have of acting from children and young people.”

The petition only needs about 2,000 more signatures before it will be sent off. Whether it forces Gove to reconsider or not, our hats are off to Marwaha for taking a stand. Sign the petition here — Michael Gove: Keep Climate Change in the Curriculum.
